UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Half a dozen elderly people have died after a nursing home in Hollywood, Florida lost power during Hurricane Irma.
On Wednesday, Sept. 13, authorities confirmed the deaths were heat related. Three patients were found dead in the facility on Wednesday morning and three others have since died in the hospital.
The nursing home’s handyman, Dave Long, told Local 10 News, the fuse responsible for the air conditioning blew during the storm.
He said he has been trying to contact a Florida-based utility company to fix the problem for the last few days, “There is nothing we can do, we have been calling and calling. I am working with the engineer here, James Williams, but it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.”
A criminal investigation into the deaths has been opened and all other assisted living and nursing homes in the city are now being checked.
