UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Las Vegas police have opened an investigation of U.S. football star Michael Bennett’s claims that officers singled him out for being black and pointed a gun to his head.
But the police union contends it’s the NFL that should be investigating Bennett.
On Sept. 7, the union wrote to the league, saying it believes the Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman’s comments were “false and defamatory.”
That letter goes on to say the two officers — both minorities — had a legal obligation to detain Bennett under the circumstances.
TMZ Sports has published video of Bennett being handcuffed in the street.
Police had been responding to an active shooter call after the last month’s Mayweather-McGregor fight, but they later determined no shots were fired.
As for a potential investigation of Bennett, a league spokesman tells ESPN that’s not going to happen. Meanwhile, Las Vegas police say their officers will be held responsible if the investigation finds policies were violated.
