UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — U.S. football star Michael Bennett says he feared he would never see his wife and daughters again after a Las Vegas police officer allegedly held a gun to his head and threatened to “blow my fucking head off” during a late August incident.
A video of Bennett’s arrest went public Sept. 6 on the celebrity sports site, TMZ Sports.
Bennett, a defensive lineman for the Seattle Seahawks, was returning to his hotel after the Aug. 26 fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor. He and others thought they heard gunshots and ran away from the noise.
Bennett said police singled him out because he’s black. After the first police officer allegedly threatened to shoot him, a second officer jammed his knee into the unarmed Bennett’s back, handcuffed him and left him in a police cruiser.
Bennett has hired civil rights lawyer John Burris. Las Vegas police are investigating.
