UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Five transgender service members have sued U.S. President Donald Trump in federal court in response to his tweet banning transgender individuals in the military.
In July, Trump tweeted, “Our military … cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”
The ban has not been formally implemented, but the position goes against policy approved by the Defense Department that allows transgender individuals to serve openly.
On Thursday, Aug. 10, Trump reiterated his position on the issue.
Trump said, “It’s been a very complicated issue for the military. It’s been a very confusing issue for the military and I think I’m doing the military a great favor.”
The lawsuit, filed Wednesday, names the plaintiffs as Jane Doe 1 through Jane Doe 5 and asks the court for a permanent injunction, among other requests, “prohibiting the categorical exclusion of transgender people from military service.”
