UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Philippine Representative Carlos Zarate has called the military’s bounty on Communists, a “invitation for a killing spree.”
Zarate was referring to an announcement by Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Eduardo Año offering P100,000 for every member of the New People’s Army, captured or killed.
The New People’s Army is the militant wing of the Communist party that has been fighting the Philippine government for decades.
Zarate said the announcement is “tantamount to sanctioning murder for a fee and an open travesty of the rule of law.”
According to Zarate, the best way to deal with the Communist insurgents would be to resume peace talks.
However, President Duterte ended peace negotiations last month and said the time for talk is over after a series of attacks on Philippine security forces by the New People’s Army.
