UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — The man who portrayed Godzilla in the original adaptations of the monster movie series has died.
Japanese actor Haruo Nakajima died Aug. 7 of pneumonia.
He was 88 years old.
Nakajima first played the giant reptile in 1954 in the original Godzilla movie.
In the first film, the costume was made of ready-mix concrete, weighing up to 220 pounds.
Nakajima told The New York Times in 2013 that during filming of the first movie, the suit was so hot that at the end of a shoot, he would wring enough sweat out of his shirt to fill half a bucket.
To prepare for filming, Nakajima said he would spend hours at the zoo studying how elephants and bears walked.
As the Godzilla series continued, the costume came to be made of rubber.
Nakajima portrayed Godzilla 12 times before retiring in 1972.
