Ex-Miss Universe Takes Public HIV Test to Raise Awareness

UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Former Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach has conducted a public HIV test in Manila in order to raise HIV and AIDS awareness.

Wurtzbach is the United Nations AIDS program’s goodwill ambassador for Asia and the Pacific.

She also heads the Progressive Information Awareness campaign, or PIA project.

Wurtzbach took the test in front of reporters on Aug. 9, a little over a week after the U.N. said the Philippines has the fastest growing number of HIV infections in Asia.

The U.N. report said there was a 140 percent increase in new cases between 2010 and 2016.

Wurtzbach said she was trying to raise awareness and remove the stigma surrounding HIV testing.

Wurtzbach said it is difficult to spread awareness in the Philippines because it is a conservative predominantly Catholic country.
