UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Esports could be added to the Olympic Games program in 2024.
With the city of Paris lined up to host the 2024 games, the next step is to decide what sports will be included in its program, and video gaming is in the mix.
Tony Estanguet, co-president of the Paris Olympic Bid Committee, told the Associated Press he plans to meet with both esports representatives and the International Olympic Committee about the possibilities.
Video gaming has significantly increased in popularity in recent years, and the Olympic Council of Asia announced earlier this year that it will include esports in the 2022 Asian Games. It said gaming is now seen as a form of sports participation.
It isn’t unusual to add new sports to an Olympic program. Five new sports will be added to the Tokyo 2020 program, including baseball, skateboarding and surfing.
So gamers, get training: A gold medal could be at stake.
