PHL Off to Hot Start at FIBA Asia Cup

UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — The Philippines upsets China in each team’s first game at the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup.

Teams from across Asia, Oceania and parts of the Middle East have converged on Lebanon for a two-week tournament to decide a continental basketball champion.

China and the Philippines were tied with less than three minutes left in the fourth quarter on Aug. 9, but guard Terrence Romeo came through in the clutch, and his squad closed the game on a 9-0 run.

The final score, 96-87. Romeo finished with 26 points.

Filipino fans reacted with glee on social media. It was a big win:China checks in at No. 14 in the world, and No. 1 in Asia, according to the latest FIBA rankings.

The group stage at the Asia Cup continues through the weekend, with the top team from each group receiving a free pass to the quarterfinals.

A champion will be crowned Aug. 20 in Beirut.
