Researchers Identify New Shark Species

UNITED NEWS INTERNATIONAL (UNI) — Attention all shark fans.

Researchers recently identified an entirely new species of shark.

The newly discovered species called the Etmopterus lailae is a little on the smaller side, coming in at about one foot long and weighing around two pounds.

But what it may lack in size the shark makes up for in unique features.

This species of lanternshark can actually glow in the dark.

The shark was first discovered in the Pacific Ocean almost two decades ago. The deep-sea creature was found at a depth of about 1,000 feet.

However, it was only recently identified.

It’s existence long remained a secret since specimens of the shark were previously misidentified as a different species known as a blackbelly lanternshark.

The discovery was announced in the journal Zootaxa.
